Multi-Axis Stages

XY, XZ, XYθ and XYZ assemblies built and aligned at the works as one unit.

Also called XY stages, XYZ stages or XY positioning stages — the same machines, under the names different suppliers print on them.

Choosing one

what buyers ask before they quote
XY, XZ, XYθ, XYZ — what am I choosing between?

The axis set. XY translates in a plane, XZ adds height to one horizontal axis, XYθ adds rotation on top of a plane, and XYZ covers all three. Each configuration in this series is published with its axes and its per-axis travel, so the comparison is on the page rather than in a conversation.

Are these assembled by the works or stacked by me?

Built and aligned at the works as one unit. That removes the squareness and cabling work from your bench, and it is also why the assembly is quoted as a single part number rather than as its component stages.

What is the repeatability of a stacked assembly?

It is not established for every configuration, and where it is not, this site leaves it empty with the reason rather than reprinting a single-axis figure. Errors do not simply carry over when axes are stacked: the lower axis carries the upper one, and squareness between them adds a term that no single-axis specification contains. Ask engineering for the assembled figure for the configuration you need.

Every figure on these pages is marked with where it comes from: the supplied published catalogue, a value normalised from that source, or a field absent from the source. Nothing is filled in with a zero.
